Across cultures, it is the means by which the sexual bonding of males and females is managed and exclusivity is encouraged. What we are trying to do, at least as far as I am concerned, is to protect your absolute right not to marry same-sex couples if you don't want to, while protecting the rights of those who do want to, because that is part of their freedom of religion.
I believe from my perspective obviously that marriage itself can be strengthened and bolstered and undergirded by including the marriage of same-sex couples.
